Insomnia is a serious problem. You lay on the bed, with heavy, tired eyes and although you do everything possible to clear your mind, you completely fail to fall asleep.
Sleep is one of the most important human needs – it helps to restore energy and maintain his body in conditions of balance and efficiency; preserves and enhances better memory; optimizes attention and facilitates learning.
Emotional tension, anxiety and negative feelings during the day may disrupt sleep. Fortunately, scientists have found an unique way to help us get rid of this stressful situation – the results are promising, the tests showing that we can sleep in less than one minute.
This technique is called 4-7-8 breathing technique and was designed by Dr. Andrew Weil – as a technique of yoga. We can try this experiment anytime, anywhere; according to the doctor, we will manage to fall asleep in 60 seconds.
How to do it:
Step 1: Put the tip of your tongue against the palate (just above the teeth). Your tongue will remain there throughout this exercise.
Step 2: Exhale completely and ONLY through your mouth. Breathing must be strong so as to take out a whizzing every time;
Step 3: Close your mouth and inhale slowly through your nose, counting silently to 4 (must be one inspiration). Hold your breath to the count of 7. Then expire completely through your mouth (powerful) counting to 8.
Step 4: Repeat this cycle, starting with inspiration – for a total of four breaths.
For promising results, make sure you inspire silent and through the nose and exhale strong and through your mouth.
Why does it work?
There are a number of reasons why this technique works so well. First, it helps to restore the nervous system and to relax, giving you a sense of calm. Also, focusing on your breathing, you are distracted by other thoughts that does not let you sleep. The technique works like a “natural tranquillizer”, helping to calm the body and to reduce stress.
